biography
Barry Patterson was born in Widnes, England in 1964. He completed an Arts Foundation course at Chester College of Further Education and from there went on to graduate from De Montfort University with an Honours degree in Illustration in 1986. Since then Barry has spent his working life producing drawings and paintings.
As well as producing paintings for private collectors Barry has spent many years working in the commercial market and has developed a wide and diverse range of illustrative and painterly skills. These extend from traditional paintings to entirely digital work and photography. Barry is an established illustrator with an international client list, principally based in New York, London, Paris and Hamburg. Links to two websites showing both digital work and pastel drawings can be found at the bottom of this page.
This website, however, concentrates on the paintings he produces. Barry paints figures and land/seascapes primarily in oil. The images he produces are rich and vibrant and though a degree of realism is often present, his main interest is in creating a sense of mood and atmosphere and exploring the subtle shifts between abstraction and representation.
